Support That Starts With the Person

Every person we support wants something different from their week. One wants to keep a job. One wants to see friends without a parent driving them. One wants to cook properly for themselves. One simply wants their own front door and the right to shut it.

Our job is to work out what that looks like and then provide only as much support as is genuinely needed to make it possible. Doing more than that is not kindness. It takes away skills people already have.

We support adults with a learning disability across Hampshire, in their own home or a family home, with hours ranging from a few a week to full daily support. Every package is assessed and overseen by our nursing team, which matters because health needs among adults with a learning disability are too often missed.

What Support Can Cover

  • Daily living and independence

Cooking, shopping, laundry, cleaning and managing a home, done together at first and handed over as confidence grows.

  • Personal care where it is wanted

Washing, dressing, oral care and continence support, provided privately and at the person's pace, only where it is needed.

  • Health and medication

Medication support, help preparing for GP, dentist and hospital appointments, and support to be heard properly during them. Annual health checks are an entitlement and we help make sure they happen.

  • Community, work and relationships

Getting to college, work, a club or a friend's house. Using transport. Managing money safely. Keeping the connections that make a week feel like a life.

How We Work

Support only works when the person actually wants the person providing it. So we involve them in choosing their support workers, not just their family or their social worker. We use whatever communication method suits them, so that is a real choice rather than a formality.

We keep teams small and consistent. Routine and familiarity matter enormously, and a rotating cast of strangers undoes progress that took months to build.

We work to the person's own communication preferences, whether that is speech, easy read materials, pictures, signing or something individual to them.

Every support worker is fully referenced, DBS checked and trained to the Care Certificate before working alone, with additional training for the specific person they support.

If You Are a Parent Wondering What Happens Next

A great many of the calls we take on this service come from parents in their seventies and eighties who have supported a son or daughter at home for decades, and who are starting to think honestly about what happens when they can no longer do it.

That is not a conversation to leave until it becomes an emergency. Support introduced gradually, while you are still there, builds skills and relationships that make the eventual transition far less frightening for everyone. Starting with a few hours a week is often the most useful thing a family can do.

If that is where you are, call us. We will talk it through without pressure and without pretending it is an easy subject.

Getting Started

  1. Talk to us

Call 01420 551309 or send an enquiry. Families, social workers and the person themselves are all welcome to make contact.

  2. We meet the person

Not just the paperwork. We find out what they want from their week, how they communicate and what they already do well.

  3. Choosing the team

The person helps choose their support workers, and we introduce them properly before support begins.

  4. Support begins, and steps back

We review regularly, and where someone has gained a skill we reduce the support rather than keeping the hours.

How Support Is Funded

  • Local authority funding and direct payments

Most learning disability support in Hampshire is funded by the local authority following a Care Act assessment. Direct payments let the person or their family choose their own provider rather than accepting an allocated one, and we are happy to be that choice.

  • NHS funding

Continuing Healthcare and Section 117 aftercare can apply where health needs are significant.

  • Self-funding and professional referrals

A written rate sheet is provided before support begins, with no long-term commitment. We accept referrals from social workers, community learning disability teams, transition teams and brokerage. Compliance pack available on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the person choose their own support workers?

Yes, and they should. We involve them directly in choosing, using whatever way of communicating works for them.

How few hours can we start with?

A few hours a week is a perfectly normal starting point, and it is often the best way to introduce support gradually.

Can support workers help with appointments and advocacy?

Yes. We support people to prepare for appointments, to be present at them and to be genuinely heard rather than talked over.

What if the person does not get on with their support worker?

We change them. Nobody should have to persevere with someone they have not warmed to in their own home.

Who can get in touch?

Anyone. The person themselves, a family member, a social worker or a community team. We are happy to talk to whoever is easiest.
