Staying at Home, With Someone There
Live-in care means one carer moving into the home to support one person, full time. They are there through the day for meals, medication, personal care and company, and they are there overnight if something goes wrong.
For most families it is the point where visiting care is no longer enough, but a care home still feels like the wrong answer. Live-in care sits between the two. The routine stays the same, the home stays the same, the neighbours and the garden and the armchair by the window all stay the same. What changes is that nobody is on their own any more.
We have been arranging live-in care for Hampshire families since 2013, and every package is assessed and overseen by our nursing team.
Live-In Care Might Be Right If
- Visiting care several times a day is no longer covering the need
- There have been falls, or the risk of a fall at night is causing real worry
- A care home has been suggested but the person is clear they want to stay at home
- Dementia is making unfamiliar surroundings distressing or unsafe
- A couple want to stay together at home when one of them needs support
- Discharge from hospital is coming and returning to an empty house is not safe
If you are not sure whether this is the right level of support, call us. We will tell you honestly if something lighter would serve you better.
What a Live-In Carer Provides
Personal care
Bathing, washing, dressing, toileting, continence support and help with mobility, transfers and getting in and out of bed.
Health and medication
Medication administration and reminders, monitoring for changes in health, working alongside GPs and district nurses, and escalating concerns to our nursing team.
Home and household
Meal preparation including special diets, laundry, household cleaning, shopping and collecting prescriptions or pensions.
Company and daily life
Conversation, hobbies, reading, walks, trips out, appointments and keeping in touch with family and friends.
How We Deliver Live-In Care
A live-in carer shares a home. That makes matching the single most important thing we do, and we take longer over it than most agencies would.
Before care begins, our clinical team carries out a full assessment covering health needs, routine, personality and what a good day looks like for the person we will be supporting. Only then do we propose a carer, and we introduce them properly rather than sending someone unannounced on day one. If the fit is not right, we change it.
Our carers are fully referenced, DBS checked and trained to the Care Certificate before working alone, with ongoing training for the specific needs of the person they support. Because live-in carers need proper rest, we arrange regular breaks with cover you have already met, so continuity is never broken.
Behind every placement sits our nursing team and an office staffed 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Why Choose Karis Care
Nurse-led from the first visit
Your assessment and care plan are led by clinical staff, not only a coordinator. Where health needs are complex, that is the difference between care that copes and care that anticipates.
Careful, honest matching
We propose a carer only when we believe the fit is right, and we would rather tell you we need more time than place the wrong person in someone's home.
No long-term contract
Live-in care is a significant step. You can change or stop the arrangement as circumstances change, subject only to the notice in your care agreement.
Getting Started
Talk to us
Call 01420 551309 or send an enquiry. We will listen and answer your questions honestly, including whether live-in care is the right level.
Free assessment at home
Our clinical team visits at a time that suits you, meets the person needing care and understands the full picture.
Matching and introduction
We propose a carer, share their background with you and arrange a proper introduction before anything begins.
Care begins, and is reviewed
The plan is written, the costs are agreed in advance and we review regularly as needs change.
Paying for Live-In Care
Live-in care is often more affordable than families expect, particularly for a couple, where one carer supports two people for one fee.
Self-funding
You arrange and pay for care directly. We provide a written rate sheet before care begins and give at least thirty days notice of any change.
Local authority and direct payments
Hampshire County Council may contribute after a needs and financial assessment. Direct payments let you choose your own provider.
NHS funded care
Continuing Healthcare, Funded Nursing Care and Section 117 aftercare can all cover live-in support where the criteria are met.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the carer need their own room?
Yes. A live-in carer needs a private bedroom and somewhere to take their breaks. They do not need a separate bathroom, though it helps.
What happens at night?
The carer sleeps in the home and is available if needed. Where someone needs regular waking support through the night, we would usually recommend our 24-hour care service instead, and we will tell you if that is the case.
Does the carer get time off?
Yes, and it matters. Carers take a daily break and regular longer breaks, always covered by someone you have already met.
Can live-in care support a couple?
Yes, and it is often the most cost-effective way for two people to stay together at home.
How quickly can live-in care start?
Often within days once the assessment is complete. Where a hospital discharge is driving the timing, call us and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
What if the carer is not the right fit?
Tell us and we will change them. We would far rather hear early than have a family put up with an arrangement that is not working.
