Someone There, For as Long as You Need
A sitting service is exactly what it sounds like. A carer comes to the home and stays for an agreed number of hours, either during the day or through the night, supporting the person and giving whoever normally does it a proper break.
It is the smallest commitment we offer. One afternoon a week, one night, or a run of nights while you get some sleep. There is no ongoing arrangement, no minimum term and nothing to unpick if you decide it is not what you needed.
That makes it the easiest way to try support for the first time. A great many of our long-standing clients started with a single sitting visit, found it worked, and built from there.
Day Sitting
Day sitting means a carer spends an agreed number of hours with your relative during the day. It is most often used to give a family member or the usual daily carer a break, but it also suits anyone who simply should not be alone for long stretches.
Both practical support and personal care can be provided during the visit, depending on what the care plan says is needed.
During a day sitting visit a carer can:
- Provide company, conversation, reading and activities
- Prepare meals and drinks, including special diets
- Help with washing, dressing, toileting and continence
- Support with mobility, transfers and moving safely around the home
- Give or prompt medication
- Take care of laundry, tidying and household tasks
- Go out with your relative, for a walk, an appointment or the shops
Night Sitting
Night sitting means a carer stays with your relative for the whole night, keeping an eye on them throughout and helping whenever they need it. What that involves depends on the person, and it is agreed in the care plan before the first night.
For many families it is the difference between coping and not coping, because the nights are usually what breaks a family carer first.
Through the night a carer can:
- Stay awake and check regularly through the night
- Help to and from the bathroom, and with continence
- Reposition someone to keep them comfortable and protect their skin
- Reassure someone who wakes confused or distressed
- Give night-time or early morning medication
- Settle someone back to sleep and manage a wandering risk safely
- Hand over to the morning carer or to the family with a full written account of the night

Frequently Asked Questions
Can we book just one night?
Yes. There is no minimum term and no ongoing commitment.
Can we book at short notice?
Often, though nights are the hardest to cover at no notice. Our office is staffed 24 hours, so call and we will tell you immediately what is possible.
Can the carer help with personal care during the visit?
Yes. Washing, dressing, toileting, continence and medication can all be included, as agreed in the care plan.
What happens if my relative needs more than sitting?
We will tell you. If the pattern suggests live-in or 24 hour care would serve you better, we would rather say so than keep selling you nights.
Will it be the same carer each time?
That is always our aim, particularly for a run of consecutive nights. We keep the team as small as the booking allows.
